With all of the political scandals going around Washington DC and the rest of the country these days, I can’t help but think of the vast majority of our politicians being hypocrites. So many will tell you that it is immoral to love who you want to love, that it is your patriotic duty to pay your taxes, etc. But how many of those people follow those high standards in their own lives?

It seems like for every politician dictating an oppressive tax code, there is another of the same ilk who has been caught not paying his. More shocking is the politician who comes out staunchly against gay marriage or equal rights, but is caught in a compromising situation with a fellow male staffer.

These points of hypocrisy led me to thinking about the country’s marijuana policy, and then it dawned on me: If politicians are so against legalizing marijuana, surely some of them are smoking, right?

It is an interesting question, and no doubt it has happened in the past. Presidents Clinton and Obama were both noted for their usage of marijuana in the past, with Obama being part of the “Choom Gang”, a group that smoked very often in high school.

With a generation of politicians that grew up during the 60s, 70s, and 80s coming upon us, it will be interesting to see if any of these Washington elite will admit that they used while in office.

Keep in mind, I have absolutely no problem with people using pot, even if they are in charge of crafting our state and federal laws. I would however, find it very hypocritical for those same politicians to smoke pot if they are in the process of restricting our liberties by keeping the herb down. If they are going to smoke, they need to work on getting it legalized for the rest of the country, not consume in private with little fear of repercussion.

What do you say? Do you think any of our politicians are actively smoking weed? Post your thoughts in the comments below.
